Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Provides comprehensive medical nutrition services to pediatric patients and their families at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Operates within the framework of Driscoll Children’s Hospital mission, vision and values.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide direct patient care among the neonatal and pediatric population across multiple units including but not limited to issues concerning gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonology, cardiology, neurology and trauma.
  • Provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) using evidence-based practice to optimize patient care and document all pertinent clinical findings utilizing the Nutrition Care Process.
  • Consult with health care team to ensure efficient and effective nutrition care of patients.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in accordance with Standards of Practice and Professional Performance for Registered Dietitian Nutritionist while providing age appropriate plan of care for patients and families.
  • Educate patients, families, health care team members, dietetic interns, and members of the community.
  • Have excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact with individuals of varying socio-economic, cultural and educational backgrounds.
  • Good time management skills/organization and be a self-starter and team player
  • Comply with all regulatory standards, including federal, state and accrediting agencies and adhere to facility confidentiality, HIPAA regulations, and patient rights policies.
  • Position may require air travel to and from Pediatric Subspecialty Centers located in Harlingen, Laredo, McAllen, Brownsville and Victoria. No overnight stays.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutrition or related field from a 4-year Accredited College or University.
  • Current Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutrition Certification by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, required.
  • Current state licensure by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR), must obtain licensure within three (3) months of hire date, required.
  • Current Food Manager’s Permit or Food Safety Certification, must obtain within two (2) weeks of hire date, required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year clinical nutrition experience (post Dietetic Internship) in pediatrics preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish): Ability to speak and write Spanish highly preferred.
