Position Overview
Under general supervision, oversees production needs for the Performing Arts programs as well as campus and community events. Performs building and loading-in all scenery and technical equipment (lights, sound A/V), equipment oversight, safety compliance, light/sound board programming and operation, and technical coordination among departments.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts in-service presentations for the purpose of training on the use of stage, hand tools, power tools, technical equipment, and audio-visual equipment.
  • Constructs scenic elements, stage scenery, sets, operates stage lifts, manual and mechanized stage rigging, etc. for the purpose of supporting students, instructors and dance/drama/music productions.
  • Resets the theater stage, including breaking down sets and dance floors, transporting and erecting sound shells, risers, and chairs, and assisting with piano and other large instrument moves.
  • Designs theatrical lighting and sound systems (e.g. audio systems, specialized audio equipment, digital lighting systems, etc.) for the purpose of providing the necessary support to all productions in the performing arts building, including configuring stage lights and light board for use by different departments and entities.
  • Directs students in Performing Arts classes for the purpose of guiding and monitoring their activities.
  • Maintains inventory for the purpose of providing security for all tools, equipment and supplies in the theater, including the stages, shop, and storage areas under the College of Marin Theatre stage.
  • Maintains stage and media equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area. Ensures the safety of the stage, pit, and elevator.
  • Manages production support crews for the purpose of providing necessary support to all productions.
  • Produces stage support items (e.g. props, scenery, special effects, fog, haze, smoke, lighting, seating, etc.) for the purpose of supporting instructor, student, community productions.
  • Repairs equipment for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
  • Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.
  • Sets-up theater equipment for the purpose of ensuring that client requests are met, including extra-departmental events such as convocation, pinning ceremonies, etc.
  • Directs the work of student workers.
  • Drives a motor vehicle, loads and delivers equipment and supplies related to production activities.
  • Collaborates with M&O on building maintenance and projects related to Performing Arts equipment and furniture.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Other Functions:

  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities, including performance-related activities in all Performing Arts Department spaces.
  • Attends meetings and workshops for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions

Requirements & Desirables

REQUIREMENTS

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent; and
  2. Job-related experience is required; and
  3. Carpentry experience, experience with mechanics of theatre sound and lighting; and
  4. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
OSHA 10, OSHA 30 and Dante Certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes & Skills)
SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating equipment used in theater set development; installing sound shell; laying dance floor; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and utilizing pertinent software applications. Use of new or additional equipment brought about by new technology shall be incorporated consistent with the level of responsibility and complexity of this job.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information before groups; and understand complex multiple step instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures; programming, patching, and operational knowledge of stage lighting, video projection, and sound requirements; costume and equipment maintenance; principles of stage production; understanding of trades (painting, electrical, carpentry, etc).

ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and coordinate a number of factors in the use of equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others under a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined and similar processes; and use equipment for a variety of purposes under different conditions that requires an understanding of various methods of operation. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of similar types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions; with data it is limited; and with equipment it is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with persons of varied backgrounds; providing direction and leadership; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:

California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  4. DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law ( California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision focusing primarily on results; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; significant climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 45% walking and 50% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, some hazardous conditions (e.g. mechanical, cuts, burns, infectious disease, high decibel noise, etc.), and in a clean atmosphere.

SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Salary Range: CSEA 115
Starting Salary Range: $32.62 - $35.96 per hour (Step 1 - 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORY
Employees in classifications represented by the
California School Employees' Association (CSEA) Chapter 196 and are required to comply fully with the CSEA/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. CSEA employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 8% of their reportable compensation on a monthly basis.

Retirement through CalPERS - MCCD contributes 26.68% of employee's creditable earnings to CalPERS on a monthly basis (2023/2024). Vested after five (5) years. Mandatory employee contribution for 2023/2024 is 7% - 8% , depending on original date of membership and prior membership status.

Life Insurance - $50,000, with the option to purchase additional voluntary life insurance for the Lesser of 5x base annual salary or $500,000
