Job Summary:

The Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible to the Director of Fitness & Performance. The Coach is responsible, along with the Director of Fitness & Performance, for the strength and conditioning program for all athletic teams at DSHA.

Approximately 15-17 hours per week. Times during the fall semester 2024 are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 3:00 – 6:00 pm and Wednesdays 2:25 – 6:00 pm. Times during the spring semester 2025 are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 3:00 – 6:00 pm and Wednesdays 1:40 – 6:00 pm. Times may be adjusted as needed.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities: Year Round

  • Maintain a religious atmosphere for students and provide a good Christian model and example. Encourage spiritual growth in DSHA students by sharing, supporting and integrating the Catholic faith in all activities.
  • Supervise the fitness center during assigned times during the school year and if needed, during the summer. Times during the fall semester 2024 are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 3:00 – 6:00 pm and Wednesdays 2:25 – 6:00 pm. Times during the spring semester 2025 are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 3:00 – 6:00 pm and Wednesdays 1:40 – 6:00 pm. Times may be adjusted as needed.
  • Maintain order and control in the fitness center.
  • Instruct student-athletes, non-athletes, as well as faculty and staff in the correct and safe execution of strength, flexibility, plyometric, and speed development exercises, as well as proper use of equipment in the fitness center.
  • Demonstrate safe and effective spotting procedures to ensure maximum benefit of exercise and safety of all using the fitness center.
  • Give instructions about general fitness concepts and methods to those using the fitness center.
  • Exercise appropriate emergency action in the event of injury. Report all injuries promptly to the Athletic Trainer and the Athletic Director.
  • Ensure that athletes with medical restrictions are not using the fitness center until written release is received from their healthcare provider.
  • Assist in general maintenance and cleaning of the facility and equipment.
  • Cooperate with the Athletic Director and the Director of Fitness & Performance in the overall development, promotion and growth of the entire athletic program with emphasis on the strength and conditioning of all athletes.
  • Formulate season goals for each team and communicate them to the Athletic Director and the Director of Fitness & Performance, coaching staff and players.
  • Keep abreast of new knowledge, innovative ideas, and techniques through attendance at clinics, workshops and publications in his/her field.
  • Promote DSHA in a positive way to the media.
  • Make sure all equipment is in good condition and propose any need for additional equipment to the Director of Fitness & Performance.

Responsibilities: Pre-season

  • Attend all three coaches’ meetings to review policies and procedures for the coming season contained in the coaches handbook.
  • Contact each coach prior to the season to discuss their needs and set up a training schedule for the season.
  • Provide a comprehensive training schedule for teams and open weight room each season to the Athletic Director and post on the fitness center door.

  Responsibilities: In-Season

  • If requested, attend each parent sport meeting to identify yourself with the parents of each sport and describe your program for each team.
  • Conduct all strength and conditioning sessions for each team as scheduled and provide open weight room time/instruction for those athletes out of season when time permits.
  • Develop a schedule in conjunction with the Director of Fitness & Performance of fitness center use so all athletes may have access to training programs.
  • Oversee and monitor the implementation of individualized sport specific training programs for all athletic teams. Teach all athletes proper fundamentals of a comprehensive speed, strength and conditioning program; including strength training, plyometrics, agility, stretching and nutrition.
  • Formulate appropriate pre-season and in-season conditioning programs, in conjunction with the Director of Fitness & Performance for each athletic team.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a testing program for all high school athletes consisting of fitness, strength and endurance activities.
  • Implement a workout management system and ensure that all coaches and athletes utilize an appropriate tracking system.
  • Assure all equipment in the fitness center is properly stored, maintained, and cleaned.
  • Communicate with the coaches on the progress of their athletes.
  • Exercise appropriate emergency action in the event of injury. Report all injuries promptly to the Athletic Trainer and the Athletic Director. Do not allow an athlete who was removed from activity by a physician to return to activity until released by a physician.
  • Work in conjunction with the Athletic Trainer to set up a rehabilitation program for injured athletes. Do not rehabilitate an injury without checking with the Athletic Trainer.

Responsibilities: Post-season

  • In conjunction with the Director of Fitness & Performance, inventory, clean, sort and store all equipment. If anything is missing, or needs repair, please inform the Director of Fitness & Performance immediately.
  • Make recommendations for any equipment/facility needs to the Director of Fitness & Performance.
  • Make arrangements to meet with the Athletic Director to discuss the school year’s training.

  Qualifications:

Must be NFHS Level 3 certified, or willing to obtain certification within a year of hire. Must be certified or willing to be certified within the first 30 days of employment in CPR/AED and NFHS Sport First Aid.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in fitness/exercise science or fitness/strength and conditioning certification. Experience working with high school student-athletes in the areas of fitness and performance training is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Effective oral, written and presentation skills are essential for success in the position. Incumbent will work with diverse groups and will need to communicate effectively with all constituents. Incumbent must be highly organized and detail oriented. Proficient computer skills with experience using MS Office software, Outlook, Teams, internal databases, the Internet and email is required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, bend and/or reach above the shoulders. Incumbent must be able to operate all fitness equipment and demonstrate proper use.

The incumbent must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employee must also be able to demonstrate a wide range of fitness and athletic exercises.

Work Environment:

The work takes place primarily in a school fitness center environment.
